Mohammad Nabi, current captain of the Afghanistan T20I team, is one of the best all-rounders in the T20I format

A solid middle-order batsman, a super-effective off-spinner, Nabi has been an integral part of the Afghanistan setup

1) On 1 January 1985, Mohammad Nabi was born in the Loger province of Afghanistan.

2) During the Soviet-Afghan War, his family moved to Peshawar in Pakistan

At the age of 10, he went to Arshad Khan’s cricket academy in Peshawar to get his cricket training

3) In 2000, his family again moved back to Afghanistan and started playing cricket there where Mohammad Shahzad, Asghar Afghan, and Shapoor Zadran became his friends

4) In 2003, Nabi played his first competitive match for an Afghanistan team against the Rahim Yar Khan Cricket Association where he scored 61 runs

5) In 2006, Mohammad Nabi scored a 39-ball century (116 runs) against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in Mumbai, India.

His performance caught the eyes of Mike Gatting and he trained Nabi in his academy for two years

6) Playing for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), Nabi made his first-class debut against Sri Lanka A in 2007 and top-scored in the first innings with 43 runs.

7) Nabi played for Pakistan Customs in Pakistan’s domestic cricket and was instrumental in helping Afghanistan gain its ODI status

8) Afghanistan played their first-ever ODI against Scotland in 2009 at Benoni

In this match, Nabi scored his maiden ODI half-century (58) to help his team register its first ODI victory. He was also named the ‘Man of the match’

9) In March 2013, after Nawroz Mangal’s removal from captaincy, Nabi led the national side in the ICC Intercontinental Cup in the UAE

10) Under his captaincy, Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh in the 2014 Asia Cup, in their first-ever major ODI tournament

Nabi captained Afghanistan in the 2014 ICC World T20 and the 2015 Cricket World Cup but resigned as captain in April 2015.

11) In 2016, in the bilateral series against Zimbabwe, Nabi scored his first ODI century and also scored 223 runs in that series

Afghanistan won the series 3–2 and Nabi was named the player of the series.

12) In the 2017 IPL auction, Nabi was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad at the base price of INR 30 lakh

In that process, he became the first Afghanistan cricketer to get sold in the IPL

13) On 15 March 2018, against the West Indies, he became the first Afghanistan bowler to pick 100 ODI wickets.

14) In August 2018, against Ireland, he became the first Afghanistan cricketer to play in 100 ODIs

15) On 29 June 2019, during the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Nabi took his 200th wicket in international cricket against Pakistan

He was the leading wicket-taker for Afghanistan in that World Cup, with ten dismissals in nine matches.

16) On 27 August 2020, playing for the St.Lucia Zouks against St.Kitts & Nevis Patriots, Nabi picked his first five-wicket haul in a T20 cricket

17) Mohammad Nabi was bought by KKR for INR 1 crore in the 2022 IPL auction

18) Nabi holds the record for the fastest T20I fifty by an Afghan cricketer

19) Nabi has twice breached the ICC Code of Conduct in international matches, both times while playing against Ireland.
