15 Kumar Kartikeya Facts: From a factory worker to an IPL Cricketer

Kumar Kartikeya, the talented left-arm orthodox spinner from Madhya Pradesh, is an exciting name in Indian domestic cricket.

Playing for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022, Kartikeya impressed cricket fans worldwide.

1) On 26 December 1997, Kumar Kartikeya was born in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh in India

2) Kartikeya’s father Shyam Nath Singh is a constable in Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC).

His mother Sunita Singh is a homemaker and also has a younger brother

3) From an early age, Yash was very interested in playing cricket

At the age of 15, Kartikeya moved from Kanpur to Delhi when he got admission to Bharadwaj Cricket Academy

4) Kartikeya didn’t want his cricket to add to the financial burden of his family, and hence, had to move to Delhi all alone

Here, he used to stay with his friend Radheshyam, who used to play league cricket in Delhi

5) Kartikeya worked as a worker in a factory in Masuri, about 80km from the academy.

He used to work in the factory all night, and then, in the morning, used to walk miles to reach his cricket academy to save Rs.10 for a pack of biscuits.

6) Kumar Kartikeya trained under cricket coach Sanjay Bharadwaj in the academy who previously coached Gautam Gambhir and Amit Mishra

He instantly got impressed by his slow left-arm orthodox bowling action, but to become successful in T20 cricket, learned wrist-spin from watching cricket matches on TV

7) Bharadwaj played school nationals and picked 45 wickets in the DDCA league.

Kumar Kartikeya was the ‘Player of the Tournament’ in three school tournaments including the famous ‘Om Nath Sood Tournament’ in Delhi.

8) His coach Sanjay Bharadwaj sent him to Ajay Dwivedi, secretary of Shahdol Cricket Association, who helped him get selected for the division cricket in Madhya Pradesh

In his first two years of division cricket, Kartikeya picked 50-plus wickets

In the State trials, Kumar Kartikeya took five-fors in every match and eventually got selected for the Madhya Pradesh Ranji squad

9) On 26 September 2018, Kumar Kartikeya made his List-A debut for Madhya Pradesh against Saurashtra in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy

In this match, he got his first List-A wicket in the form of Robin Uthappa

10) On 28 November 2018, Kumar Kartikeya made his first-class debut for Madhya Pradesh against Kerala in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy

He picked Basil Thampi’s wicket in the match as Madhya Pradesh managed to grab a superb victory

11) On 2 March 2019, Kartikeya made his T20 debut for Madhya Pradesh against Sikkim in the 2018–19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Delhi

In this game, he grabbed his first T20 wicket in the form of Sikkim opener Milind Kumar

12) In his 9 first-class matches, 19 List-A, and 8 T20s, he has managed to pick 35 first-class wickets, 18 List-A scalps, and nine T20 wickets.

13) He was a net bowler for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022 and caught Sachin Tendulkar’s attention with his newly learned chinaman bowling

14) In April 2022, Mumbai Indians signed him as a replacement to Arshad Khan for the 2022 IPL for INR 20 lacs

15) On 30 April 2022, Kumar Kartikeya made his IPL debut for the Mumbai Indians against Rajasthan Royals at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai

In his very first over, the talented spinner dismissed Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson and finished with the figures of 1/19 in his four overs
