David Willey: 12 interesting facts about the unassuming English all-rounder

English all-rounder David Willey is one of the best bowling-allrounders in the cricket world.

Tagged as a T20 specialist, Willey has appeared in IPL, PSL, BBL, and all major T20 leagues around the world.

1) On 28 February 1990, David Willey was born in Northampton, Northamptonshire, England

2) Willey is the son of former English cricket player and international umpire Peter Willey.

His wife Carolynne Willey is an English singer-songwriter

3) In April 2009, at the age of 19, David Willey made his first-class debut for Northamptonshire against Leicestershire

In this match, he scored 60 with the bat and stitched a superb 163 run partnership with Andrew Hall.

4) In The 2009 Twenty20 Cup, Willey averaged 11.30 with the ball, including a 3/9 spell against Worcestershire

5) In 2013, against Surrey in the Friends Life Twenty20 Final, Willey scored 60 runs and picked 4-9 with the ball, including a superb hat-trick to clean the tail

With the help of his superb performance, Northamptonshire managed to gain a 102-run victory in a rain-shortened match

6) On 8 May 2015, David Willey made his ODI debut for England against Ireland in Dublin.

The match got abandoned due to rain but it couldn’t prevent Willey from getting his first ODI scalp in the form of Andrew Balbirnie

7) In the same year, he made his T20I debut against the same team at Bristol.

8) In the 2016 T20 World Cup, against Afghanistan, Willey (20 not out) and Moeen Ali added 57 runs, the highest partnership for the 8th wicket in the history of the T20 World Cup

He also picked 2–23 with the ball to help his team defeat Afghanistan by 15 runs.

ICC included him in the ‘Team of the Tournament‘ for the 2016 T20 World Cup

9) CSK brought David as a replacement for the 2018 IPL, and he played two seasons with CSK before they released him prior to the 2020 IPL auctions

10) On 30 July 2020, Willey took his first five-wicket haul (5-30) in ODIs against Ireland at Southampton

David Willey ended that ODI series against Ireland by picking 8 wickets and scoring a total of 98 runs, including a half-century, and was elected the ‘Player of the Series’

11) In January 2022, Multan Sultans drafted Willey as their diamond category pick at the 2022 PSL draft.

12) RCB bought David Willey for INR 2 crores in the 2022 IPL auction.
