David Wiese:12 Superb Facts about Namibian All-rounder

David Wiese, the South-Africa born Namibian cricketer, is undoubtedly one of the best T20 all-rounders from associate nations

The ‘Jack of all trades’, be it batting, bowling, or fielding, Wiese is one all-rounder you would always like to have on your team

With that being said, here we have listed down 12 superb facts about David Wiese.

1) On 18 May 1985, David Wiese was born in the Gauteng province of South Africa.

2) At the age of nine, Wiese started his cricket training at a local cricket institute

South African coach Harry Shapiro was the owner of the institute

3) David was initially fond of spin bowling but later switched bowling pace because of his height

He is a right-handed middle-order batsman and a right-arm medium pacer

4) A good student, Wiese studied internal auditing at the University of Pretoria

While studying for his degree at the University of Pretoria, he occasionally used to play cricket for the university’s third team, but that too, out of love for the game and not as a profession

5) In 2009, David Wiese was the highest wicket-taker in the 2009 edition of the Hong Kong Super Sixes.

6) Wiese was in the Titans squad for the 2012 Champions League T20.

On 26 October 2012, David Wiese played a superb knock of 61 runs off just 28 balls in the semifinal of the 2012 CLT20 against the Sydney Sixers

Even though the Titans didn’t make it to the finals, his knock received a lot of attention on the social media

7) In 2013, during South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka, Wiese was brought in as a cover for Jacques Kallis.

On 2 August 2013, David Wiese made his T20I debut for South Africa in Colombo, but a poor performance saw him sidelined for the rest of the tour

8) The best moment in David Wiese’s international cricket career came against the West Indies in Durban

On 14 January 2015, Wiese took a five-wicket haul (5/23) against West Indies and also scored 21 runs off just 16 balls to win the ‘Player of the match’ award

9) In the 2015 IPL auction, David Wiese was bought by RCB for USD 460,000

In his two-year IPL stint with the RCB, Wiese has picked up 16 IPL wickets

He is particularly remembered for his unbelievable catch to dismiss Shreyas Iyer against the Delhi Daredevils at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

10) In 2016, he signed a contract with the Sussex County Cricket Club as an overseas player for the 2016 T20 Blast

In 2017, David Wiese signed a three-year Kolpak deal with them

11) He was a member of the Tshwane Spartans which ended as the runners-up in the 2019 Mzansi Super League.

Wiese plays for Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) which managed to win the 2022 edition of PSL.

12) On 6 March 2022, he made his ODI debut for Namibia against Oman after playing six ODIs for South Africa

By doing so, David Wiese became the 15th cricketer to represent two different international teams in ODI cricket
