Bhanuka Rajapaksha: 11 little-known facts you need to know

Bhanuka Rajapaksha, the Sri Lankan middle-order batsman, is one of the most effective T20 cricketers of the modern era

His explosive batting do provide glimpses of Sanath Jayasuriya and we certainly hope that he will provide a lot of entertainment to all of us in the ongoing IPL

So today, we have listed down 11 little-known facts about this talented cricketer.

1) On 24 October 1991, Bhanuka Rajapaksa was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka

2) Rajapaksa began his cricket career in Royal College Colombo and was a key player with both bat and ball for the Royal College team

A natural sportsman, he was also interested in squash and swimming.

3) In 2009, he toured Australia with the Sri Lanka U-19 team to play an ODI series against the Australia U-19 team

In the second U-19 ODI, he smashed 154 off 111 balls and ended as the leading run-scorer in that series

4) People have often drawn similarities between Bhanuka’s batting style to that of Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya

Bhanuka Rajapaksha was also the first Sri Lankan U-19 cricketer to score 1000 Youth ODI runs

5) In 2009, Bhanuka made his first-class debut for the Sinhalese Sports Club and later went on to play for Barisal Blazers in Bangladesh’s NCL T20

6) In 2011, Bhanuka became the ‘Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year’ for the second time and became only the fourth Sri Lankan to achieve this feat.

At the CEAT Sri Lanka Cricket Awards 2011, Rajapaksha was also awarded ‘Young Emerging Player’ in the U-19 Category

7) In 2019, playing for Sri Lanka-A in the second unofficial Test against India-A, he scored 110 runs in 112 balls at the KSCA ground in Hubli.

8) On 5 October 2019, he made his T20I debut against Pakistan and scored 32 runs off 22 balls to help his team achieve a 64 run victory

In the second match, Rajapaksa scored a destructive 77 runs off 48 balls and was adjudged the player of the match

9) In July 2021, Bhanuka was suspended from all three cricket formats for one year by the Sri Lanka Cricket for a breach of contract

10) On 5 January 2022, Rajapaksa announced his retirement from international cricket citing personal reasons but later withdrew at the request of the sports minister.

11) Bhanuka Rajapaksha was bought by the Punjab Kings for INR 50 lakhs in the 2022 IPL auction
